Abu Laban Information Technology Methodology

STRATEGY

Where the functional and information needs of the business are established, primarily, through interviews and used to develop a business model. This model (once agreed by the business analyst, the initiator of the strategy and all other interested parties) provides a clear and unequivocal set of aims and intentions that forms the statement of corporate intention.

ANALYSIS

Where detailed function, entity and data flow analysis is performed in a way to extend the depth of understanding established in the strategy stage.  This brings the ability to document the precise requirements of the business application system.

DESIGN

Where a means of implementing a solution for the business application system is defined. A data storage mechanism is formed (normally DataBase tables derived from the entity analysis). Modules are also defined to implement the functions. Designs of the architectural systems and transitional systems and transitional paths are also established.

BUILD

Where the components of the solution are developed; that is, tables or other data storage mechanisms are created, modules are coded and other manual procedures are produced, all of which are thoroughly tested

DOCUMENTATION

Which is the on-going stage during which user and system documentation is written.

TRANSITION

Where the developed system is carefully introduced into the business, preferably using a modular approach and often integrating components of existing systems with the new. New procedures, documentation, training and re-training, if needed, assist new or existing staff to implement the system.

PRODUCTION

Where the system is running in a live situation, but under constant review to ensure that it is still relevant and appropriate to the needs of the business situation it is designed to serve.

This technique is now thoroughly proven in thousands of business situations all over the world. After a short period of adaptation, computer and non-computer personnel become familiar with its step by step approach and its clearly defined responsibilities. Of course, all methods rely heavily on the skill, approach and attitude of those using them. Care and precision are as important as knowledge about the concept. However, the use of a structured approach coupled with great care in the investigation stages of the systems, recognition of the value of constant consultation and verification of conclusions at all stages will surely result in faster and more accurate implementation than it may be possible with conventional development procedures.
